Wanted: Waylon Jennings

I bought this one three or four years ago - at that time, I did not know much about ol' Waylon, because I was "new" in country music. This one is a low-budget CD by a Dutch label, from which you will get more the next time on my blog. However, the compiler only put Jennings' first album "Waylon Jennings at JD's" (1964) and his first single from Brunswick ("Jolé Blon" / "When Sin Stops", 1958) on this disc. No liner notes, not one song from his later seventies outlaw years. A poor comp, but nobody said that this one is intended to be a good one. But interesting, though! The 1964 songs were cover version of hits of that day, recorded in late 1964 by Jennings and his band, the Waylors, in Phoenix, Arizona, for the album, which was sold only at JD's. The LP was well received by Jennings' audience and with his strong regional success, he got a recording contract with RCA the next year. Note that on "Lorena", "Money (That's What I Want)" and "Abilene" the singer is not Jennings. It's his at-that-time-guitarist Jerry Gropp. The line-up for the 1964 tracks were: Jennings (ld gtr/vcl), Jerry Gropp (gtr/vcl), Paul Foster (bs / hrmy vcls), Richard Albright (drums). On the Brunswick single, Buddy Holly played guitar. Have fun!
